This year the Gala took place at the Toronto Event Centre on Friday, June 21st and will again brought together an assortment of professional athletes and personalities from hockey and other sports. All net proceeds go to Dr. Seeds research project on congenital heart disease at the Hospital for Sick Children and the event promises to be one of the most high profile Toronto galas of 2019.

It has long been known that children undergoing surgery as newborns for congenital heart disease (CHD) are at significant risk for adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. Dr. Mike Seed, Head of Cardiology at SickKids, believes the root for neurological deficiency in children with congenital heart disease develops in the prenatal period, as they are not receiving enough oxygen to the brain, while in the womb, due to a malformed heart. Dr. Seed and his colleagues are piloting a trial to test the potential of providing additional oxygen to pregnant mothers at 20 weeks gestation, for the remainder of their pregnancy, to determine if an increase of oxygen will improve neurological outcomes for these babies. All funds raised by the All-Star Gala for this project will be matched in full by a prestigious Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR) grant from the Canadian Institute for Health Research (CIHR).
